TOPICS

PREHealth is a multidisciplinary project including 4 research topics and a program to implement and exchange knowledge with local stakeholders.

Topic 1: Raising Awareness on health effects of urban open spaces

A growing body of research shows the positive effects of green open spaces on people’s health and well-being. However, there is still limited clarity among local stakeholders, urban designers, and policymakers how to plan the urban green and blue infrastructures to support active usage and healthy behavior such as social interaction, physical exercise and active transport. In this topic, we seek to bring together evidence from literature, facts, best practice and guidelines for our four case study cities.

Topic 2: New learning technologies and location-based games

Increasing digitalization is an ongoing trend in European cities including the pervasive use of fitness apps and location-based games (LBGs) like Ingress or Pokemon Go. In this topic, we investigate how new learning technologies and LGBs can augment education and co-design of urban green and blue infrastructure. Our aim is to devise formal and informal education tools and methodologies, based on LBGs, Augmented Reality (AR) and related technologies that provide learning opportunities in situ, in public open spaces; and adapt these tools for use in higher education and secondary school curricula; and for adult learning.

Topic 3: Education and participatory research tools

An essential part of participatory planning is to help stakeholders to better understand the complex relations between urban design, active usage, and healthy behaviors. In this topic, we pilot test the devised education tools and methodologies by integrating them in courses of higher education institutions, school curricula, and informal adult education.

Topic 4: Implementation strategies

In this topic, we introduce initiatives to enhance the engagement of citizens in the planning and monitoring of public open spaces, in cooperation with local authorities and the civil society; and encourage volunteering.
